YouTube ads with AI video: skippable, bumper and Shorts ads

How to make YouTube skippable, bumper and Shorts ads with AI video: what each format needs, how to script the first seconds, and a three-format ad plan.

The short answer

For YouTube ads, make three pieces from one idea: a skippable in-stream ad in 16:9 that earns attention before the skip button appears, a short bumper ad that says one thing, and a vertical 9:16 version for Shorts. AI video lets you build all three from the same shots.

As of October 2026, skippable in-stream ads can be skipped after 5 seconds and bumper ads are short non-skippable ads of up to 6 seconds. Google changes ad formats and options from time to time, so check the Google Ads help center for the current list before you plan a campaign.

The three formats and what each needs

  • Skippable in-stream: plays before or during videos, mostly landscape 16:9. The first five seconds decide whether the viewer stays. Name the brand or show the product early, because many people will skip.
  • Bumper: very short and cannot be skipped. One message, one image, one brand moment. Good for reminding people who already saw a longer ad.
  • Shorts ads: appear between Shorts in the vertical feed. Make them in 9:16 and make them look like a Short, with captions and a quick hook.

Exact length limits for each format and recommended file specs are in Google's ad specs pages. Confirm them before export.

Write for the first five seconds

In a skippable ad, assume the viewer leaves at second five. Write those five seconds so they work as a full ad on their own: the product, the brand name and the main benefit. Everything after is a bonus for people who chose to stay.

  • Second 0-1: the product in use or the problem, no logo intro.
  • Second 1-3: the benefit in plain words, on screen and in voice.
  • Second 3-5: brand name and product shown together.
  • After 5: the demo, details and call to action for people who stayed.

Build all three from one shoot

Plan your AI shots so they can be cut three ways. Generate the key shots in 16:9 for the in-stream ad, then generate vertical versions of the same scenes for Shorts. Do not simply crop 16:9 to 9:16; you lose most of the frame and the product often ends up cut off.

In ClickPop, Film Studio lets you set the camera body, lens, focal length, aperture and camera move for each shot, then cut the shots into one graded film. That is useful for the landscape in-stream version. The YouTube Shorts studio builds the vertical version with a hook, beats, captions and payoff.

Keep a consistent color grade across all versions so they feel like one campaign. ClickPop's presets include 430 color grades you can reuse on every shot.

One idea turned into three ads

Product: an insulated lunch bag for office workers.

  • Skippable (16:9, around 30 s): 0-5 s, a hand unzips the bag at a desk and steam rises from a container, voice says "Hot lunch at one o'clock, packed at seven. The Keepwarm lunch bag." 5-20 s, morning kitchen packing, commute shot, desk shot. 20-30 s, product on a plain background, offer and call to action. Try it
  • Bumper (16:9, up to 6 s): steam rising from the open bag, text and voice "Still warm at lunch." Brand name on the last second.
  • Shorts ad (9:16, around 15 s): hook text "Packed at 7. Hot at 1." Close-up of the zip opening, quick cut of the commute, product centered above the bottom band, captions throughout.

Prompt for the hero shot: "Close-up of a hand unzipping a navy insulated lunch bag on an office desk, steam rising from a glass food container, soft window light, shallow depth of field, slow push in." Generate it once in 16:9 and once in 9:16.

Try this prompt in Create Video

Only claim what the product does. If you have not tested how long it keeps food warm, do not put a number on screen.

Voice, sound and captions

In-stream ads often play with sound on, so voice matters more than on social feeds. Use a clear voiceover that names the brand early. ClickPop has AI voices in 30+ languages, which helps if you run the same campaign in several countries.

Shorts ads are closer to social video. Add burned-in captions and keep text away from the bottom and right edges where YouTube's interface sits.

Use music you have the rights to use in ads. Many tracks cleared for personal videos are not cleared for advertising.

Disclosure and policy

Google's ad policies apply to AI-generated ads the same as any other ads: no misleading claims, no impersonation, no use of someone's likeness without permission. Google also has rules on synthetic content in some ad categories, such as election ads. Check Google's current advertising policies for your category before launch.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A logo intro that wastes the five seconds before the skip button.
  • Cropping a 16:9 ad into a Shorts ad and cutting off the product.
  • A bumper ad that tries to say three things.
  • Unlicensed music in an ad.
  • Claims you cannot prove, such as times, results or rankings.
  • Testing one long ad only. Make two or three openings and compare view rates.

To produce hook variants quickly, ClickPop's Ad Studio makes ad variants and hooks for testing from one idea.

Questions

How long is a YouTube bumper ad?

As of October 2026, bumper ads are non-skippable ads of up to 6 seconds. Check Google's ad specs for current limits.

When can viewers skip a YouTube ad?

Skippable in-stream ads can be skipped after 5 seconds, as of October 2026. Put your brand and main message in those seconds.

Can I crop my 16:9 YouTube ad for Shorts?

You can, but you lose most of the frame. Generating a native 9:16 version of each key shot looks much better.

Are AI-generated YouTube ads allowed?

Yes, if they follow Google's ad policies. No misleading claims or real people's likeness without permission, and check category rules.
